Además de desarrollar su labor en el ámbito empresarial, -fundó y presidió la empresa Telesincro, que en los años sesenta fabricó los primeros ordenadores diseñados en España-; ha estado muy vinculado a la política de telecomunicaciones, investigación, comunicaciones, y ciencia de la Unión Europea después de participar en el Comité Organizador de los Juegos Olímpicos de Barcelona 1992. Es consejero asesor de la Comisión Europea en materia de telecomunicaciones e informática, presidente del Information Society Forum de Bruselas, del European Institute for Media de Düsseldorf y presidente del comité de expertos que evaluó la política científica y tecnológica europea por encargo del Parlamento y del Consejo de la Unión Europea. Ha sido también director general de la Corporación Catalana de Radio y Televisión.
He is a Spanish businessman and politician, doctor in Industrial Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia. He studied Political Science. He was Minister of Industry and Energy during the II Legislature of Spain and deputy to the Congress for the province of Barcelona.
In addition to developing its work in the business world, – founded and chaired the company Telesincro, which in the sixties made the first computers designed in Spain; has been closely linked to the telecommunications policy, research, communications and science of the European Union after participating in the Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games of Barcelona 1992. He is an advisor to the European Commission in the field of telecommunications and information technology, president of the Information Society Forum in Brussels, the European Institute for Media in Düsseldorf and chairman of the committee of experts who assessed European scientific and technological policy on behalf of Parliament and the Council of the European Union. He has also been general director of the Catalan Radio and Television Corporation.

José María Gay de Liébana es, quizá, uno de los economistas más mediáticos del momento, invitado habitual de los platós de televisión y colaborador habitual de numerosos diarios. Ha sido popularmente bautizado como “el catedrático del sentido común o el economista indignado”
Doctor in Economics and Doctor in Law, he is a Member of the Reial Acadèmia de Doctors. Professor of Financial Economics and Accounting at the Faculty of Economics and Business of the University of Barcelona, attached to the Department of Accounting. He is an Honorary Member of the Superior European Council of Doctors and Doctors Honoris Causa.
José María Gay de Liébana is perhaps one of the most prominent economists in the media at the time, a regular guest on television sets and a regular contributor to numerous newspapers. He has been popularly baptized as “the professor of common sense or the indignant economist”.
